3 Easy Suhoor Ideas for Ramadan | Sweet & Savoury Recipes

If you’re anything like me, deciding what to eat for Suhoor can sometimes be a challenge.

It’s the middle of the night, you’re half asleep, and you don’t necessarily feel like standing in the kitchen preparing something complicated!

So today I’m sharing three delicious Suhoor ideas that are easy to make and give you a nice mixture of sweet and savoury options.

I’ve got a Nutella, Banana & Hazelnut Fried Toastie, a wonderfully filling Cheesy Omelette Paratha, and a traditional Bread & Butter Pudding that’s particularly useful if you’re feeding a larger family.

Whether you call it Suhoor, Sehri or the pre-dawn meal, hopefully you’ll find something here to try this Ramadan. 🌙

1. Nutella, Banana & Hazelnut Fried Toastie

We’ll start with the quickest recipe of the three.

And admittedly, this isn’t necessarily the healthiest Suhoor you’ll ever eat! 😄

But it is incredibly easy and absolutely delicious.

Chocolate, banana and hazelnuts are sandwiched between slices of bread before being pan-fried until the outside is beautifully crisp and the inside is warm, sweet and gooey.

You could also experiment with the filling and use whatever you already have at home.

Ingredients

  • Bread
  • Nutella or another chocolate spread
  • Banana, sliced
  • Chopped hazelnuts
  • A little oil or cooking spray for the pan

Method

Remove the crusts from your slices of bread.

Generously spread chocolate spread over one slice and arrange the banana slices over the top.

Sprinkle with chopped hazelnuts.

Place another slice of bread on top and use a fork to press around the edges. This helps seal the toastie and prevents all that lovely filling from escaping while it cooks.

Lightly spray or grease a frying pan.

Add the toastie and fry for a minute or two on each side until the bread is crisp and golden and the filling has warmed through.

Serve immediately while it’s lovely and warm.

Mix Up Your Fillings

One of the nice things about this recipe is that you don’t really need a recipe!

You could try different combinations such as peanut butter and banana, chocolate spread and strawberries, or whatever combination you think will work.

It’s a great option for those mornings when you want something sweet and don’t have the energy to do much cooking.

2. Cheesy Omelette Paratha

Now we’re moving on to something much more substantial.

Think of this as a cross between an omelette sandwich and a quesadilla, except instead of tortillas we’re using parathas.

You get seasoned egg with onion and tomato, melted cheese and crispy paratha all together.

What’s not to like?

Ingredients

  • 10 eggs
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 1 tomato, finely diced
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic granules
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon coarse black pepper
  • Parathas
  • Grated cheese

Method

Finely dice the onion and tomato.

Crack the eggs into a large mixing bowl.

Add the salt, garlic granules, smoked paprika and coarse black pepper and whisk everything together.

Stir in the diced tomato and onion.

Cook your parathas according to the packet instructions and put them to one side.

Pour a ladleful of your omelette mixture into a frying pan.

Allow the egg to cook until it’s almost set.

Place one cooked paratha directly on top of the omelette and carefully flip the whole thing over.

Sprinkle a generous amount of grated cheese over the egg.

Place another paratha on top, creating a sandwich.

Flip again and cook for another minute or two until everything is heated through, the outside is lovely and crisp and the cheese inside has melted.

Slice and serve warm.

A Filling Savoury Suhoor

I really like this one because you’re getting eggs, vegetables, cheese and paratha all in one dish.

And the combination of the crispy paratha, omelette and melted cheese is really delicious.

If your parathas are quite small, use a smaller frying pan so that the omelette and paratha are approximately the same size.

3. Bread & Butter Pudding

The final recipe takes a little longer than the first two, but the advantage is that you can make one large dish for the whole family.

Bread and butter pudding is such a simple, comforting dessert.

Buttered bread is layered with sultanas and fresh lemon zest before being soaked in a rich custard made from milk, cream, eggs and vanilla.

And my favourite little addition is the demerara sugar on top, which gives the pudding a lovely crunch.

Ingredients

  • 60g butter
  • 10 slices bread
  • 60g sultanas
  • Zest of ½ lemon
  • 350ml whole milk
  • 100ml double cream
  • 3 eggs
  • 50g caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons demerara sugar

Method

Preheat your oven to 180°C/160°C fan.

Grease an ovenproof dish with a little butter.

Remove the crusts from your bread and spread each slice with softened butter.

Cut the slices into triangles.

Arrange a layer of the buttered bread in your oven dish.

Scatter over some of the sultanas and freshly grated lemon zest.

Add another layer of buttered bread and finish with the remaining sultanas and lemon zest.

Make the Custard

Add the whole milk and double cream to a saucepan.

Heat until the mixture comes to the boil and then remove it from the heat.

In a separate large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and caster sugar.

Gradually pour in the warm milk and cream mixture while whisking.

Add the vanilla extract and whisk again.

Strain the custard mixture through a sieve into a jug. This will remove any little pieces of cooked egg and give you a smoother custard.

Slowly pour the custard all over the bread, making sure it gets a good soaking.

Sprinkle the ground cinnamon over the top, followed by the demerara sugar.

Bake for approximately 35 minutes, or until the pudding is puffed up and beautifully golden on top.

Serve warm and enjoy!

What Should You Eat for Suhoor?

There really doesn’t need to be a special type of “Suhoor food”.

Some mornings you might fancy eggs and something savoury, while other mornings you might want something sweeter.

And sometimes you simply want whatever requires the least amount of effort at that hour! 😄

These three recipes give you three very different choices:

Something quick: Nutella, Banana & Hazelnut Fried Toastie
Something savoury and filling: Cheesy Omelette Paratha
Something for the family: Bread & Butter Pudding

You could also prepare some of the ingredients before going to bed to make your early morning a little easier.

More Ramadan Food Inspiration

One thing I’ve learnt over many years of preparing food for a large family is that Ramadan food doesn’t need to be complicated.

A little preparation and a collection of simple recipes that your family genuinely enjoys can make the month much easier.

And if you’re waking up at three or four in the morning to prepare Suhoor, easy is definitely a good thing!

I hope these three Suhoor ideas have given you some inspiration to try something different.

May Allah accept our fasting, prayers and duas, and may you and your family have a peaceful and blessed Ramadan.

Ramadan Mubarak! 🌙❤️
